What is it about a car that makes emaciated, sleep-deprived, isolated men into idiots? Ian and Tom had a plan. A smart one. As soon as they found out about the reward challenge, they made the very wise agreement that if one of them won, they wouldn't choose the other to go with him. So who hit Ian with the Stupid Stick? When he said he was going to take Tom, I thought Tom was going to whack him upside the head.
That Katie wound up sticking with Ian is a miracle, and yet another example of players going with their emotions instead of their brains. Katie's odds seemed much better with the women than with the men. But she apparently decided to trust Ian... which may ironically put Ian into the a no-win situation. If Ian wins the final immunity challenge and doesn't take Katie with him, the jury will vote against him and Tom will win in a landslide. If he takes Katie, the jury will vote for her. I think the only way Ian can win is to pull a Richard Hatch and tank the final immunity, trusting that both Katie and Tom would rather take Ian with them to the finals.
Posted by Peter at May 12, 2005 11:25 PMYes, but did you notice that Jenn voted Caryn off, too? Is she just noticing which way the wind is blowing (Caryn did seem pretty pissed, so maybe there was an off camera "you're going home, Caryn" moment before Tribal Council) or is there something going on?
I don't think Ian or Katie can reliably be expected to vote the other off now. Tom should approach Jenn (if he hsn't already) and see what could be done. Though his recent strongarm tactics (and Caryn's poison pill presence on the jury) may not hold him in good stead vs. Jenn in the final two.
I liek this season.
Posted by: Danny on May 13, 2005 4:13 AMFirst off, what started as sort of a lackluster season has not only blossomed, but has become EXACTLY what we want in Survivor (well, what *I* want, anyway): tons and tons of politics and maneuvering and emotion and mistakes and everything. You'd think the show would always come to this, but for many of the past seasons, it hasn't. So good TV going on here.
Secondly, while watching the show I thought ALL of the people were idiots, but now, in the light of day, I can see the genius of Katie's move. If she had gone with the women's alliance, yeah, she might have had a good chance of being the in the final two, but most likely at the cost of BOTH Tom and Ian's votes - plus, probably, the odd chick voted out of the final 3. But with Tom and Ian playing the heavies, she actually has a chance to vote out Caryn and Jen... and still get their votes, maybe!
What I don't understand is this: Caryn v. Katie. Tom & Ian. Okay... so why not get rid of Jen now and deal with it later? Wouldn't this foster good will with both Caryn and Katie? Voting neither of them out? What is Jen still doing there? This, to me, is either emotional play on the other's parts, genius play on Jen's part, or, most likely, clever editing on Burnett's part. I would have really liked to see more Jen content near the end - especially at tribal council. I'm sure there's plenty of stuff from her on the cutting room floor.
Whatever... good play, stupid play... at least there's PLAY, you know? I'm really hooked.
Oh, and I definitely think TAR producers turned that plane around. An incredibly disappointing finale. And one that has a good chance of turning me off of next season.
Posted by: Dave on May 13, 2005 7:25 AMWhew! I thought I had missed something. When Ian picked Tom to accompany him on the reward challenge, I did notice that Tom seemed quite perturbed. I was waiting for a "What the F" comment from Tom, but it never came, which led me to believe that I might have misheard the conversation.
They DID agree NOT to pick the other if either won reward - RIGHT?
So why didn't Tom march upside Ian's head? Was there another conversation BEFORE the challenge that we missed? Was Tom's response to Ian so riddled with profanity that there was no way for them to air/edit it?
Methinks the answer lies somewhere on the cutting room floor. Are we, the audience, being set up? Jenn voting for Caryn leads me to believe that something is amiss ;)
