I Am SO There

Take the writer/director of the fabulous, underappreciated animated delight The Iron Giant and hand him the keys to the Pixar renderfarm and you get The Incredibles. Still seventeen months away, but I can't remember the last time I've been this excited about a film. Hilarious teaser, great concept. Pixar hasn't made a stinker yet, and this one doesn't appear to be targeted at the kiddies. I can hear the licensing train pulling out of the station already.

Hilarious teaser?! I'm shocked. When I heard the premise for the movie, I was intrigued and thought that it sounded interesting. I viewed the trailer and really enjoyed the style of the opening and then... sat slack-jawed for 30 seconds of Mr. Incredible trying to put on his belt. Funny? Hardly. It would have been alright if it had been a punch line to a quick joke, but it just kept going and going. Yeah, we get it, he's gotten older and his belt no longer fits. Har, har. I'm hopeful that this is not indicative of the level of "humour" the actual movie will possess but my level of anticipation has dropped to zero on this one.

It's a 30-second teaser. That pretty much limits it to one gag. And what they did with that gag was more than just the gag itself-- they showcased the animation. The expression and character development shown in that teaser is exceptional. I can't wait to see more.

As for going and going, I refer you to The Simpsons who have this down to an art. The scene with Sideshow Bob and the rakes is one of the funniest things I've ever seen, precisely because it keep going well past the point of reason.

To summarize: You, sir, are a poopyhead. A size eight poopyhead. =)

As I was watching the teaser for the Incredibles, I too thought of the humor of rakes and Sideshow Bob.

Something like the teaser, where the initial gag is funny, keeps hammering home the fact. First its funny, then it drags on, our minds expecting the quick bit of humor to be over, then we starting thinking about it, and you know what, its still funny after 20 seconds. Its about timing and the laugh-cycle of a joke.

Needless to say, the fact that The Incredibles is being worked on by the director/writer of The Iron Giant is wonderful.

Speaking of licensing, The Hulk: what the hell?

I saw The Hulk Slim Jims in a 7-11 today. Right after I got my The Hulk Mountain Dew Slurpee.

Now, at least the Slurpee was green. Slim Jims, or course, are long, brown and tubular, which might actually be more appropriate for this movie, I can't say for sure.

Still, I can't believe the amount of co-promotion out there for this movie. Nor can I believe that given the number of crazy things I've seen branded with The Hulk name, that there aren't any green condoms out there yet. Who's got some startup capital?

pixar is always beautiful to watch and always delivers a great story, but this trailer didn't inspire me. copy and paste this link...

javascript:var open_child_window=window.open('http://www.msnbc.com/m/c/ctv_msnv3.asp?id=msn/7073&subid=Entertainment&name='+self.name,'mp','height=460,width=520');

the trailer is more fun if you don't know what it's for. it could be awful, but i can't resist it.

I am a HUGE fan of Bugs Bunny, but that movie looks D-U-M dum. And with Mel Blanc gone... some things are just best left alone.

i agree that it doesn't look good, but i thought the opening to the trailer had a clever bit.

Pixar, pixar, pixar.
This does look like fun, and the trailer was sweet- with the slow serious start and the building gag joke (feeling a bit sensitive about the belly Greg?) when it comes right down to it, anything with a super-hero theme has my interest.
I find it unfortunate that the writer/director of the wonderful -mostly hand drawn- Iron Giant is jumping on the CGI train. I know that's where all the money is these days, but give me a painted Pinocchio over a computer Shrek any day. As good as the computer is getting at rendering every single stinkin' hair, humans still don't look right- even big green ones.

Hallo!

This may be 17 months after the fact, but I'm going back through your blog, trying to find a link to you talking about the Microsoft Game that you ran. My girlfriend in Boston went out to see The Incredibles yesterday and raved about it. Have you been to see it yet? Does it live up to your hopes?
